Banksy Painting Raises $23M For UK Health Charities

A painting honoring U.K. healthcare workers by Banksy has sold for a record $23.2-million, Christie’s auction house reports. The piece, titled “Game Changer,” celebrates nurses as superheroes and was first donated by the anonymous street artist to the University Hospital Southampton in May 2020.

The black-and-white painting was given to the hospital in the early days of the pandemic with a note that read: “Thanks for all you’re doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if it’s only black and white.” A reproduction of the picture will remain on display to replace the original.

Christie’s says the sale price set a record for Banksy. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to University Hospital Southampton and other health organizations and charities across the U.K., according to the auction house.
