Internet Helps Locate Missing Hiker Using Texted Pic

Thanks to the keen eye of someone in the community, a missing hiker was found safe this week. Rene Compean was reported missing Monday evening after he texted a friend to say he was lost and his cell phone was dying, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reports. The photo showed his legs dangling from a rocky cliff and it was shared by officials to help pinpoint his location.

Compean didn’t have his phone’s “location” turned on, so rescuers couldn’t get his location code from the picture, the sheriff’s department said. Rescue teams searched overnight, but didn’t have luck finding him. But after posting the photo online and asking for the public’s help with the search, an avid hiker of the area stepped in to help.

Benjamin Kuo shared the GPS coordinates of where he believed Compean was in the photo and he was right. The missing hiker was found within three-quarters of a mile of there, safe and in good condition, according to officials. Compean and the sheriff’s department thank everyone who worked to find him, especially Kuo.
