Shepherd Colver had always wanted to see the Statue of Liberty and this summer, his dad, James, took him there, but their journey was just as important as their destination. The father and and son didn’t just hop on a plane from their home in Washington state to get there, they rode their bicycles across the country.
The idea came to the nine-year-old two years ago, but when their adventure started, he kept getting headaches and they had to stop. A trip to the hospital revealed Shepherd has Type 1 diabetes, but now that it’s under control, there was no stopping them this time. The pair biked for 18 weeks, covering 33-hundred miles to make it to the New York City landmark.
And when they arrived, Lady Liberty didn’t disappoint. “It was definitely worth it,” Shepherd says. “It’s pretty cool.” His dad had a good time too and said it was a “wonderful bonding experience.” James explains, “I feel like I invested my time as his dad really well here.”
