A charity organization in Palm Desert, California, is giving away 400 bicycles to kids in need. For the 26th year in a row, Variety Children’s Charity of the Desert is giving away bicycles to deserving Coachella Valley area fourth graders. At a socially-distanced drive-thru event this weekend, the organization distributed 400 bicycles and helmets to students from low-income families who have demonstrated good citizenship.
This year’s giveaway brought the organization’s total to over 8-thousand bicycles they’ve given out since the program started. And even though they had some supply issues and had to delay the event, they managed to get each of the 400 bikes to a deserving kid. Variety of the Desert’s executive director Heide Maldoon is proud of what they’ve been able to accomplish. “There’s always things that define an organization and a team of people,” Muldoon says. “And I just had to say in a time of challenging crisis is when we see who people really are and how they can step up.”
As each student rolled through the pickup line, they got a shout-out and a gift bag to go with their bicycle. One recipient, student Andres Rosas was especially grateful for the new bike. “It feels amazing and exciting,” says Rosas. “I’m very thankful for this bike I get right now and this chance and opportunity.”
